Basement apartment

At about the same time the housing market collapsed, our home business collapsed. So the hubby had to scramble and go back to work. Hard to do, but we're just grateful to have a job when so many can't seem to get one. We thought about selling our home but the value had dropped so dramatically that we found ourselves under water.  It was a scary time for us until my brilliant husband came up with a great plan to turn our basement into an apartment. Long story short, it turned out great and has saved the day.

Here's what we ended up with...

We added a white subway tile back splash in the kitchen a couple of weeks after these pictures were taken.

It's 1100 sq. ft. and has three bedrooms, a laundry room, one full bath, full kitchen and family room area. We opted to stain the cement floor as opposed to carpet and tile. I thought it was a better way to go for a rental situation and we love the character it took on in doing so.

  1. Lisa! It turned out beautifully, and very San Fran condo like!
I love the kitchen and the floors... where have you found all you great pillows?

  2. Thanks! Believe it or not they all came from either Target or TJ Maxx.

  3. This is what the apartment looked like when Ashley and Kyle lived there. She really wants to move back and finish decorating the place. Like mother like daughter! She also wants to turn the middle bedroom into her dressing room/walk in closet, which I talked about in my closet dreaming post.

  7. did you stain the floor yourself? I am interested in doing the same thing but in a lighter color. How difficult was it to achieve that look?
